Care & FAQ

Solid wood is easy to live with

Suar and teak have survived Javanese weather for decades before reaching your wall — a home is a gentle retirement. Here's the little they ask for, and answers to the questions we hear most.

Caring for suar & teak

Everyday cleaning

Dust with a soft, dry cloth — that's the routine. For marks, use a barely damp cloth and dry the surface right after. Skip furniture sprays, all-purpose cleaners, and anything with ammonia or bleach; solid wood doesn't need them and doesn't like them.

Long-term care and refreshing the wood

Keep pieces out of relentless direct sun (which shifts wood color over time) and away from radiators and heat vents (which dry it out). Wipe spills promptly rather than letting water stand.

Every piece leaves the workshop with a clear polyurethane finish that protects the wood and preserves the natural look — so there's nothing to oil, wax, or re-treat. Routine dusting is all the surface asks for.

Is the grain supposed to vary this much?

Yes — that's the product. Suar swings between pale honey and deep chocolate in a single slab; teak cross-sections carry voids, burls, and ring patterns no other tree repeats. The photos on this site are representative, not a template. If two pieces ever matched, one of us would owe you an apology.

Floating shelves

Mounting basics — walls, studs, and anchors

Each shelf mounts on a concealed steel bracket: level the bracket, screw it to the wall, slide the shelf over the rods, then tighten the two locking screws underneath. All hardware ships in the box — 8 screws, 8 anchors, and 2 locking screws for the set.

Screw into studs where possible. The included anchors are made for drywall — use them wherever a stud isn't where you need it. For brick, concrete, or solid plaster walls, use masonry anchors rated for the load (not included).

How much weight can each shelf hold?

Up to 40 lbs per shelf when mounted as directed. For heavier loads — a long row of hardcovers, big planters — favor stud mounting and keep the weight spread along the shelf rather than stacked at the outer edge.

Bathrooms, kitchens, and humidity

Ventilated bathrooms and kitchens are generally fine homes for solid wood — it will expand and contract slightly with the seasons, which is normal and harmless. What to avoid: direct shower spray, water pooling on the surface, and mounting directly above a steaming kettle or radiator.

Are they safe for a nursery?

On a nursery wall, out of reach of small hands — absolutely. One important caution: even though the shelves install securely, don't mount them directly above a changing table or crib. It's not the shelf that's the risk; it's the things on it, which can fall and injure a child below. Pick a wall across the room and style it freely.

Wall clock

Is the movement really silent?

Yes. The quartz movement sweeps continuously instead of ticking once a second — no sound in a quiet bedroom, office, or reading corner.

How do I hang it?

Like a framed picture: one sturdy screw or picture hook, seated in a stud or a rated anchor. The clock is 16″ across and about an inch thick, so a single proper fixing carries it comfortably.
